working through Typography

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 2:36pm

The last few years of designing flyers, newspaper ads and posters has left me with supreme admiration for the work of Typographers. If you’re thrown into design work the only way we've found to test the quality of that work is by revisiting it over time. So after five years you’d think flyers would be a snap…  Good Typography makes a big difference.

The above vid is "Typographics" by Boca and Ryan Uhrich from Vancouver Film School. You get into a whole other world when you start looking at Typography in motion. When camera movements and great audio are added to the mix the familiar reinvents itself (to different degrees of success). Here are some great examples.

"Devil’s Advocate" in Typography

"Pulp Fiction" in Typograhy by Jarratt Moody

Feeling Good in Typography by Tamara Gildengers Connolly

Other notables – The Big Lebowski, Zoolander and Oceans 11

3-D fun for friday!

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 3:37pm

So your Friday video is more cheese-ball motion graphics than animation but this latest update of MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” video is in 3-D dammit and it’s guaranteed to carry your Friday off into a psychedelic haze. 3-D glasses included.

As you may have heard...

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 1:25pm

Hi Folks,

We’ve had a few calls and e-mails regarding Don Hertzfeldt’s departure from the Animation Show and wanted to comment now that this is being picked up around the web. Everyone here is sad to see Don leave but we all support his decision and wish him the very best.

The Animation Show has an all new program that’s set to launch this June with special premiere events kicking off in April and May in Austin and Chicago. We’re in the midst of loading in the new show now so expect big changes here as the line up and tour dates will be announced in the next week or so.

We’re experimenting with a new type of program this year and some incredible commissioned work from artists Smith and Foulkes, Joel Trussell, Dave Carter and PES. Mike Judge has hand picked over two dozen fantastically hilarious shorts for what is shaping up to be our best program to date.

The Animation Show was started with the goal of getting great short films back in theaters where they belong. The heart and soul of this program has always been the dozens of creative, independent filmmaking, spirits that stand together in each year’s line up. Mike Judge and everyone here at Animation Show HQ remain committed to sharing the work of these incredible individuals with you and above all… promise an animation tour this year, the likes of which you’ve never seen.

More news very soon!

Thank you all for your support

Monkey News gets animated

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 6:49pm

Monkey News is an excerpt from a Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington podcast that seems to have run its course now. This isn’t the first time these guys have had their audio committed to animation as seen with their Gervais’s Xfm show back in 2005 but the material here is fantastic as well. If you follow the youtube comments it looks like animator Joost has more on the way.  The animation is about as simple as it gets which just goes to show great audio is king!

-Thanks Clay!

Time to move

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 5:32pm

It’s been a loooong week. We just found out that the show has to pull up stakes and find a new headquarters. We’ve been working in Burbank across from NBC these last two years in a large post production facility. And now that the strike has ended there’s a crunch for work space. The spring cleaning is actually a relief. Digging through old prints, stacks of out of date promotional materials, press clippings and projects long dead it will be good to lighten the load. It will be difficult finding another home that facilitates a daily snack time but we’ve got our feelers out there. So communication here at TAS HQ might get a bit dicey as we grow legs again and get mobile mid April but we’ll keep everyone posted.

Blackboard

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 1:45pm

Stefano Bertelli mixes it up with a new stop motion video lathered in Arctic Monkeys for good measure. A hundred years after J Stuart Blackton’s "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" the chalkboard is still a force to be reckoned with.

Your time at the movies

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 12:26pm

There seems to be a cinema revolution in the mix right now as movie theater chains here in the US get serious about going digital, going 3-D, and growing larger in general. So what will your movie going experience be like in the next decade? It doesn’t look like the economy is going to slow the movie business down but big studios will keep trying to tighten the gap between theatrical and DVD release making you really wrestle with whether you need to spend your hard earned coin on “Drillbrit Taylor” this weekend or the following Tuesday when it’s .99 cents on iTunes. But you have to ask yourself could I be getting more out of all this?

All of these toys, additions and expansions take focus away from what makes going to the movies great. This weekend take a look in the paper and try something different. Good movie programmers have kept theaters alive for years and will continue too long after the day when the personality free movie chain dries up and wastes away. This weekend there are cinemas across the country screening midnight movies, outdoor picture shows, re-releases of film classics and one night engagements where you can meet film makers and creators. You just have to do a little digging…

*Event of the week* The Alamo Drafthouse (one of.. if not THE best in the country for specialty cinema) features Gangs of New York Feast. Awesome. And not coming via netflix or iTunes anytime soon.

You, Dog (Kids are so small)

"Idiots and Angels" opens at Tribeca!

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 2:02pm

Bill Plympton’s new animated feature “Idiots and Angels” is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film festival April 23rd. Variety had all the details earlier this week.  This is Bill’s latest feature since "Hair High" back in 2004. We screened some early scenes and trailers for this new noir pic back before the last Animation Show tour and can’t wait to see it all up on the big screen. Congrats Bill!

Put It To Use

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 12:31am

Put It To Use is the latest from stop-motion duo Paul Cummings and Tony Fiandaca whose earlier work Tony Vs. Paul is still a monster on Youtube with well over 4 million views. Put It To Use is currently heading in the same direction. The guys have been busy with a handful of other projects and only had time to work on this between gigs. The vignettes that comprise the short all string together well even though the piece feels a little disjointed in spots.  It’s clear that these guys have a lot more tricks up their sleeves for the future. Catch Taylor’s interview with Paul a few months back here.

Checking back with "We The Robots"

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 11:20pm

We’ve been working behind the scenes here the last few months on a handful of cool new t-shirts penned by animators we dig. So I use the royal WE a little too liberally as THEY'VE been doing the heavy lifting and the show has just been experimenting with shirt brands, colors, labels, etc… But very shortly you’ll see new designs from filmmakers Chris Harding, PES and Joel Trussell.  Traveling around online this afternoon I had a chance to catch up again with Chris’s fantastic wetherobots.com.   The twice weekly strip has grown to thrice weekly and you owe it yourself to check in with Robots for the latest installment!

Friday video: Dog Interface

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 4:27pm

Juan Pablo Etcheverry has created some hauntingly creepy stop motion work and his music video “Dog Interface” is no exception. The video is for the band Radiohead and was included on their 2004 DVD “The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time” or (TMGLMOAT)

Gabe Swarr's History of Donkey Kong

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 4:04pm

If you’re itchin for something fun to watch this weekend I HIGHLY recommend the stellar documentary “King of Kong” focusing on the epic high score battle between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell on the classic arcade game Donkey Kong.

Animator Gabe Swarr directed a fun ‘history of the game’ short for the DVD release of the film and you can watch above. Cold Hard Flash has some more of Gabe’s recent work here.

Playing catch-up, March 6, 2008

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 1:35pm

We’ve been trying to set some time aside to watch the last pile of submission DVD’s that have built up on the shelf. There isn’t much hope for anything new for theatrical at this point though. The new tour program has ballooned to just under 90 minutes so now it’s time to watch this monster with an audience and see what goes and what stays. We’re still looking at new work for all of our other platforms. There’s a strong certainty that the Animation Show will splash across mtv2 again in the next few weeks with new unseen shorts. The Myspace project is on hold for ridiculous insurance reasons that I can’t go into without fits of rage. But we’ve got our eyes on a new home for this growing library of incredible shorts. These things just take an unbelievable amount of time to confirm before you can discuss. Also on the horizon are fresh batches of iTunes episodes which can be expected before June. The DVD-R’s just arrived for final sign off and review of the Volume 3 DVD and after that it’s time to settle in to 12 – 17 hours of promotional material design with the new program flyer, one sheet, newspaper adverts, banner ads and general web overhaul. Rebecca has her hands full with the new trailer design, gathering film elements from animators in eight different countries, catching up on the finer points of Qube digital projection, compiling screeners for theater owners and booking all of our travel for the next five months. We’ll team up later today for more venue booking, budget revisions, t-shirt and merch design and an overall marketing plan for the new tour. Sound like fun?! Click the video on above and go back and read this while it plays. That pretty much sums up the sensation.

-Thank you to Taylor for the heads up on Bert and Ernie go Brutal! Thrashtacular.

My Paper Mind

Posted by Robert to Animation Show Journal at 7:59pm

“My Paper Mind” is an experimental short using a technique called “Stratasstencil” (?) devised by filmmaker Javan Ivey. Javan explains on his site “Stratastencil is an additive process. Stratacut removes material to reveal another layer, while this technique adds another layer while still showing the layer before it.” All of this with 4x6 cardstock. Beyond the technical ‘how to’ it’s great to see a short that nails it on running time. Well made and nicely done Javan.
