I spoke to someone today who got to see some of the upcoming Looney Tunes DVD set. I asked him how the set looked and he said, "Good news and bad news... but mostly bad news."

The good news is that it includes a bunch of my favorite cartoons like Gorilla My Dreams, Falling Hare and Grusome Twosome. The bad news is that the transfers are MASSIVELY DVNR'ed. Lines blur out all over the place, and it's painfully obvious even at speed. Falling Hare and The Big Snooze are completely mangled.

But that isn't the worst... In Grusome Twosome, they've painted the naked Tweety YELLOW. Yep, you heard me right. They digitally painted the pink Tweety to make him yellow. Don't ask me why they did that. I don't know. It truly boggles my mind to even think about it...

I don't know about you, but that makes me madder than the bee Tweety slaps around in that cartoon. It's obvious that the folks in charge of home video at Warner Bros have absolutely no clue what people really want, and no respect for the cartoons themselves.

If anyone has an address to write to, please post it. Cartoon fans should get them to fix this BEFORE it comes out. Once they press all those DVDs, they'll never be able to fix it. If we accept stuff like this, it will just get worse in future releases.

Pass the word...

See ya
Steve

I'll ask and find out. Perhaps they're also preparing some pared down recycle packages like the Premiere Collection.

Steve, You HAD to have been given bum information. I havew formulated three theories about this

1. The Person you spoke to doesn't know what the hell he or she is talking about

2. WHV is using this as a Ploy to generate interest in LTGC: Vol 3.

3. They ARE Going to do this (And conisdering what happened to Tom and Jerry, you can't put it past them)

In any case, I'd take whatever this person says with a grain of salt, at least Jerry is allowed to say otherwise.

In Grusome Twosome, they've painted the naked Tweety YELLOW.

In THE GRUESOME TWOSOME Tweety IS yellow. He is pink in the first two Clampett's (A TALE OF TWO KITTIES and BIRDY & THE BEAST).

The person who did an audio commentary today brought in the second volume to point out the DVNR in it (that explains the reference to GORILLA MY DREAMS and THE BIG SNOOZE - FALLING HARE is planned for Volume 3, but the copy screened for commentary may have been the original test film restored from the neg years ago - that one (and ACROBATTY BUNNY) were heavily DVNR'd and were done as tests years ago - clips of them were used on several "Sing-Along" videos - as far as I know they are not using that copy for the final Golden Collection dvd).

Everyone is free to believe whatever they want to; but for what it's worth, I can tell you I believe it. I think it's a lot better to complain about a problem with a DVD release BEFORE it's in the stores, while they can still fix it. That's why I'm passing this info along.

Steve,

Probably the print used on the laserdisc wasn't of the best quality

The laserdiscs contain many of the same transfers that are on the first DVD set. They're the closest to the way these cartoon look on the big screen that I've seen yet. The color of Tweety is clearly flesh color.

This would be a good trivia question. We even stumped the world's expert on WB cartoons!

I double checked it... the first yellow Tweety was in Freleng's "Tweety Pie". All of Clampett's were flesh colored. I read an interview with Friz once where he said that he made Tweety canary yellow in his first Tweety cartoon because he found Clampett's flesh color to be a little grotesque. Of course, it *is* grotesque, but that's why it's funny.

Yeah, Steve, even after screwing around with the color controls, I still get a flesh colored Tweety in "Gruesome Twosome". I find it hard to believe that they'd reink Tweety, though DVNR will probably be on this set. It happened on the first two.

Unfortunetly YOU'RE WRONG!

But why take it from me? I'll leave it to those reading this forum to decide. Everyone pull out your copies of GRUESOME TWOSOME and vote. Pink or Yellow.

Here are some unaltered frame grabs images from my book I TAWT I TAW A PUTTY TAT. He's a bit pale yellow, but yellow nonetheless:

They didn't reink the character, they just "paintboxed" the hue of the character frame by frame. This is pretty easy to do digitally... If you use Photoshop, it's like using a hue changing brush. The animation isn't changed, just the color. My friend was told that it was done deliberately.
