QUOTE (arturo_gtz @ Oct 18 2004, 09:07 PM) Mr. Beck, I understand the contract that you have with WB, but at least could you tell us a "Yes" or a "No" regarding the censorship? If you can't response, i understand I cannot respond. PLEASE, everyone, refrain from using this board to ask me questions about Warner Home Video. I cannot answer them here. When I can say something I will let you know. |

QUOTE (Gordan @ Oct 18 2004, 09:50 AM) This is the worst piece of animation news in months. What happened to all the promises that this will be an uncut, uncensored collector's edition DVD set? Are people at Warner Bros really this clueless? Sorry Mr. Beck... i understand... I was looking the information in the back of the T&J set, and it says nothing about Uncut or Uncensored... i guess WB has a point with this :( ![]() This situation is very sad, i was looking for this release from a year ago (when it was anounced), i avoided all of the previous dvd releases to buy this... (in fact, i actually bought this... i'm consulting with amazon the way to return it with the lower cost for me) -------------------- ---------------------------

While it didn't say "uncut" on the back of the box, it did say "uncut" in the advertising. There's an ad for the Tom and Jerry set in the current issue of Premiere that states that the cartoons are "uncut." So if WB doesn't fix this, they're engaging in false advertising.

Why don't we just all wait and see what's to come of it. Thad already mentioned that Jerry Beck will have more to say eventually and it's been made clear that WB is trying to remedy this situation (which is more that can be said of the R&S DVD release). Can't we just be patient and see how it falls out?

One thing I should add is that it's not uncommon for a studio to release a DVD with a big, honking mistake that nobody catches before it's released, especially with a non-current movie. WB released "The Great Race" with the soundtrack screwed up in the credits (they've since fixed this, though I don't know if they have an exchange program for it) and "Kiss Me Kate" mis-framed. Universal released a huge high-profile release, the "Back to the Future" trilogy, with two of the movies mis-framed. The accidental use of cut prints is also quite common, as we've seen with Ren and Stimpy and Tom and Jerry and many TV shows (Columbia often has some cut syndication episodes mixed in with the uncut episodes on its TV-on-DVD releases). It's not something that's unique to T&J, and I don't think it's a conspiracy; it's just that, to quote the guy in "Rocket-Bye-Baby":
"Somebody goofed." |

Giving the DVD a quick once-over...
I went straight for the CinemaScope cartoons. Excellent quality. And "Touche Pussy Cat!" is in true stereo sound. Interestingly enough, when Nibbles paints the caricature of Tom during the final third of the short, the dialogue track of him singing along with the "Frara Zhaka" (sp, I know..someoen correct me on this, please) song is mabsent in the stereo master--the orchestral track plays the song alone. |

Definately ... the cinemascope shorts look very good. The Stereo sound on Touché Pussy Cat was beyond what I had expected really. Are there any other in stereo ... I guess someone must have answered that question already somewhere, but my memory fails me again Anyway, quality wise I'm not really complaining, although in some shorts there's really a lot of damage noticeable. Those 3 cuts kinda spoil the release ... cause it'd been a hit otherwise. (all IMO of course) -------------------- " ... Forever Eyes. Dark. Somebody's Angel ... "

Thanks for the typo fix
...and "Touche, Pussy Cat!" is the only short in stereo. And the three 'Scope cartoons are the only ones that were restored or remastered. All the rest use the same TV prints we've been seeing on TBS, TNT, and the Cartoon Network for quite some time (The dead giveaway being the blue--or some other color sometimes--windowboxing on the opening titles). This also explains the edits. Someone's got some 'splainin' to do. WB is lucky I like Tom & Jerry like this. ...and the second set NEEDS to have Mammy Two Shoes (this coming from a Black man)...and with Lillian Randolph's voice. |

I'm waiting on any purchases until Jerry's allowed to comment in regards to the censorship on behalf of Warner Bros. here because I for one am very dissapointed and had really high hopes for this set! I just want to know if a) this was simply an oversight or if the cuts were purposefuly implemented, and b) whether WB plans to make good on their word of delivering these films uncut by offering some sort of disc replacement program because at this point, that's really the only way I'll give into a purchase..

And now I find out only 3 cartoons were actually remastered (and noticeably too, they look marvellous) and the rest is the same old stuff I've been watching for years now on CN, beit in better quality on DVD now (analog TV broadcasting is still normal here ... yuck) Oh well I'm hoping for some good news these next few days. -------------------- " ... Conspiracy theory time:
Maybe (just maybe) WB didn't have all the restorations done in time...so they put this disc out using the available TV prints so that they could meet their release date? Most of the public isn't going to know (or really care) if the cartoons are restored/remastered or not. Most won't even care; they just want to see Tom & Jerry. ...but I had my hopes up that I'd be seing pristine, brand-new prints of some of my favoirite cartoons...because WB had done so well with the Looney Tunes set (I was in heaven with that set). I was rather surprised to see the same slightly faded prints and rough sound (on a lot of the cartoons on disc one, you can hear the compression that was used to digitally archive the masters for television broadcast; that's not a DVD encoding error. These prints came straight from the Cartoon Network) I know it was only $15, but....I already have most of these cartoons (and these exact same prints opf them too) In my collection ('Scope cartoons excluded, of course). I feel sort of cheated. |

That's the way I kinda feel too ... I guess I too was expecting something like the Looney Tunes Golden Collection in terms of "remastered and restored". I guess it was too good to be tue ... it's gonna be a long wait to see what either Jerry or WB has to say about all this
