I heard that there is a Woody Woodpecker DVD collection that is being sold through Columbia House.

Anyone know anything about these? Good? Bad? Eh? Eh?

Hmm. All these little bits being edited sounds kinda lame. Overall, are you satisfied with the ones you've gotten?

The first volume was great, I enjoyed it thoroughly but bear in mind that these cartoons are being shown in the context of the actual Woody Woodpecker show. It is essentially, vintage episodes of the Woody Woodpecker Show, seen exactly as aired and not as these shorts were theatrically released. I wasnt as happy with volume 2 due to the lack of theatrical cuts and editing, plus the featured cartoons were not personal preferances but I'd still say these are definitely worth owning and from the reviews I've read, volume 3 is expected to be a vast improvement.

Overall, I'm very happy that I signed up for this collection. You get all the classic Woody segments including newsreels and moments with Walter Lantz, etc. The prints are actually pretty good as well.

These reviews from DVDToons will probably be a lot more insightful...

Vol. 1: http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/167

Vol. 2: http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/180

Vol. 3: http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/194

Vol. 4: http://www.dvdtoons.com/database/1092

Hope that helps. I'd strongly suggest purchasing these while theyre still available. I believe Jerry had some involvement in this project as well (Dont quote me) dxsmile.gif

There has been very mixed reaction to Woody Woodpecker Columbia house collection with a fair majority not liking the set. There are many cartoons that are edited with a few with their original Universal titles. After reading other posts about the collection, I decided not to buy the set on what i've heard.

Like Looney Thad, I haven't received a new disc (I have the first 4) in 2 or 3 months (more?).

Y'know I don't really miss 'em. The first one or two was fun fun viewing - and i'm old enough to remember when these shows originally aired after grade school for me - but I got BORED with them in general. In each collection there are one or two very nice pieces (won't go as far as to say "classic) but overall they end up being almost $25 bucks/disc.. so I'll probably stop the subscription. I was waiting for "The Legend of Rockabye Point" by Tex Avery to show up on disc 4. It's there.. quite nice.. and now i can quit.

Just curious... were you on Vol. 4 also?

Hopefully this wont be that case for me since I lagged behind on my intitial purchase. I'm assuming they were just slow with compiling vol. 5....

And again, while I agree with the above statements about the editing and the lack of original title cards, again you have to recognize before purchasing this set that it is NOT a collection of theatrical shorts, but of a vintage television series and shown in that context. Thats how I have come to appreciate this set. I really hope the next volumes ship out soon.

I'm still waiting for Vol. 5... It seems Vol. 5-10 are all on backorder... Jerry, do you have any idea what's going on?
