On Saturday Morning, Dec. 24, between 6 and 7 a.m., CN showed "Toon Heads Christmas Special" Episode #33.
One cartoon, probably pre-WWII, was about a cat who masqueraded as Santa. He put a balloon into his pants to appear fat, and brought a bag of toys into the mouses' home. Before he could work his mischief, the child mice discovered who he was and used a variety of devices to poke and stab and pelt him, foiling his plot to eat them. The animation, lighting, and gags in this were as good as I have ever seen. The work as a whole was genius-level, IMO, animation cartooning as good as it gets. Does anyone know what this cartoon is and how I can get ahold of it? I am grateful for any help on this and don't know where else to turn. CN is no help at all. J.D. Richardson, Jr. |

Welcome J.D., good to have you here! You were watching "Alias St. Nick" made in 1935 and part of two former Disney animators (Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising) Happy Harmonies series made for MGM pictures. You may have heard of Walt's Silly Symphonys series and this was a take on that. Harman and Ising were masters of animating and are two of my favorites. All their cartoons were this well accomplished and they never slacked. There were older christmas themed VHS tapes that had this particular short I think released by Turner/MGM/UA and also a Happy Harmonies laserdisc! It might be on a WB DVD paired with a feature film, anyone know? Thanks for inquireing and stopping by!

The company sold licensed prints of this holiday cartoon in color (struck on both Kodachrome & Anscochrome prints) as well as in black & white. It's a great addition for a holiday-themed film show. |

Pictoreels were also available on standard 8mm, though I'm not sure if they printed anything color on 8mm. Usually Castle was the only one printing silent color 8mm films back in the 40s. -Tom -------------------- My Early Animation Blog

It might be on a WB DVD paired with a feature film, anyone know? Thanks for inquireing and stopping by! This title appeared along with 3 others on the "MGM Cartoon Christmas" VHS release from 1989. It was NOT included on the LD box set! This post has been edited by rex racer: Dec 29 2005, 11:45 PM |

It has taken me a while to reply because I wasn't able to locate this at first. But thanks to your advice above, I found it on VHS on the used market: MGM Cartoon Christmas. It includes Alias St. Nick, The Pup's Christmas, The Peachy Cobbler, and Peach on Earth. The latter was exceptionally good and nominated for an Oscar in 1939. Thanks again. J.D. Richardson |
