I just did a search, and was surprised not to find anything on FP. The great Id monster FX were never converted to cels. They drew the creature on paper, and shot it using high contrast film, and composited in the negative image. When you look at it, it's boiling all over the place, but it's a kind of noise they were using intentionally because it's getting electrocuted in a force field. Disney also provided lasers, the flying saucer's exhaust, etc.
There's a decent doc that shows some of the original Id monster animation drawings. They also talk about the weird and brilliant electronic score by Louis and BeBe Barron. They talk to BeBe very briefly. They had to invent everything that made a noise for that film. The movie's really good. It seems to level off at the end-- I always wanted to see the Id monster chase them through the Krell power plant-- but is still a great sci-fi movie. In the restored print, you can see that they acheived their goal of bringing sci-fi pulp magazine covers to the big screen. And the Disney animated effects are a big part of that. -------------------- |
