Does Jerry or anyone have any insight into the context that these shows might be released... i.e. - as originally broadcast complete package sets with all accompanying bridging character shorts, or simply as complete character themed sets compiling each character's library of cartoons?

I do... but I cannot discuss these details.

Because I work freelance for Warner Home Video, I had to sign a confidentiality agreement and thus I cannot discuss projects I'm involved with - or of knowledge of any WB projects in production.

I will tell you, without fear of reprecussion, that my friend Earl Kress (producer of Rhino's Hanna Barbera's musical audio CDs of The Flintstones, Pic-A-Nic Basket, etc.) will be involved, adding his extensive expertise to the compiling of future H-B dvds (Neither Earl nor I was involved with the recent releases of FLINTSTONES, JETSONS or JONNY QUEST). So we are in good hands.

Okay, these were really neat if you're four or five years old (also really loved Ruff and Ready), but I'm wondering how well they hold out when viewed by adult eyes?

One Huckleberry episode that sticks in my mind is where he's a TV repairman who had an one of a kind replacement tube with a ludriciously long part number (probably the influence of me using long numbers as gags) that was snatched and kept away by a dog. (So Huck is a benefictary of cartoon evolution on the dog is a victim?) (BTW, I had a similar thing happen to me in second grade with a cooks tube radiometer.)

Also the monster movie parody with the mutant potato. That popped up in a weird dream that I had as an adult. ("Spudnik"!)

What creeped me out as a rug rat was an iris out gag where some witch turned the oblivious Yogi and BooBoo into this eight legged siamese freek.

I have a question unrelated to these DVD's, that I really hope you can answer for me Jerry (or anyone with such insight):

When shows like Huckleberry Hound first broadcast, were the cartoons packaged per season ever rehashed among episodes or were newly produced shorts made available each airing of their intitial run?

Also, since Yogi Bear was featured as a supporting or accompanying short subject on The Huckleberry Hound show, were these same Yogi cartoons re-used later when Yogi recieved a successful television series of his own or were newly produced, exclusive shorts packaged for this later series?

Can you think of any other similair cases where various early Hanna Barbera tv show packages contained the same character shorts and if so, would these fall in the same context as above in regards to the re-use of content?

Earl Kress would know for sure - I'll have to ask him.

I believe that - for example - the Yogi Bear cartoons made for THE HUCKLEBERRY HOUND SHOW were never used on THE YOGI BEAR SHOW in it's original first run presentation. In later years the cartoons were indeed mixed and matched... There are records showing which cartoons were in which episode originally. Earl has them.

Thanks Jerry,

I've been curious as to the original format and packaging of these shows for some time and have inquired on various messageboards but nobody seemed to have a definitive answer.

I'm really interested to see what Earl says, I appreciate you asking!

I recall that the orginal YOGI BEAR cartoons from the 1958-1959 "Huckleberry Hound" show were included in the orginal run of the YOGI BEAR SHOW (1960). I believe the number of new cartoons were made to equal the number of SNAGGLEPUSS and YAKKY DOODLE cartoons shown within the format.

Regarding "Huckleberry Hound," it would be enlightening to many to see the original Kellogg's Corn Flakes circus opening, as well as the joining segments for the cartoons.

Indeed they would, Ray!

Didn't Jerry have a piece on his original cartoonresearch.com blog maybe two years ago about a mysterious extended version of the opening theme song? I believe it had something to do with an audio tape Daws Butler made of an original telecast. Refresh my memory here, Mr. Beck.

Or did I dream the whole thing?

This is what I live for! I want to see these things so bad, I can almost taste the Sugar Pops.

(I know. I really DO need to get a life...)

It'll be nice to see the Kelloggs ads in the package. They did get the Kelloggs ads on the Monkees DVDs. But somehow General Mills didn't work out a deal to get on the Bullwinkle and Rocky DVD set. And those are great - especially Bullwinkle singing about Trix.

Thanks a lot Ray, that's somewhat discouraging for the promise of complete package sets of these shows on DVD though, unless the rehashed shorts were somehow omitted. Eitherway, compiling these shows would seem like a confusing task! I was sure that I'd seen some Yogi Bear cartoons on his show that were previously featured on the Huckleberry Hound Show but I wasn't sure if they were repackaged as such or not. Now I know. Thanks!
