Can anyone tell me who was responsible for the opening animation on the Phil Silvers Show? Just watched it the other day, couldn't tell.

I think it's from Playhouse, and it was a UPA director--it looks like Gene Deitch, but it could be Blechman or Hubley.
Ken Layton
I almost want to say Format Films or even Shamus Culhane Productions.

I know, Sheckster-- that's the image I made my guess from --I think it's John Hubley-- it's style is so close to Marky Maypo-- it could be Jay Ward and Shamus C. fresh from doing Crusader Rabbit--but I thinkst itst Hubley.

I don't know how you can attribute it to anyone by looking at it, but I think it's pretty safe to say that it would be a New York studio.

Most cartoon intros for sitcoms were done in California, I Love Lucy(HB), Bewitched(HB),I D O Jeanie--just to name the most obvious.

But those shows were also produced in California. The Phil Silvers Show was filmed in NYC (as was Nat Hiken's next project, Car 54, Where Are You?). So I'd be inclined to go with Steve.

I don't doubt Steve's comment--I haven't heard of any produced in NY-- but Jay Ward and several other studios were based on both coasts so it may not be as simple as NY or L.A.--work may have been done on both coasts, production one place editing another...

Well, the DVD contains the original credits for the show, which were live action footage of soldiers marching and a plug for Camel cigarettes. It appears that the cartoon opening was done later, for syndication; if so, then the fact that the show was filmed in NY is probably irrelevant.
